Pros and Cons of Moving to France
Those seeking employment will find France is home to many major national and international companies which offer a full range of career opportunities in which pay, conditions and career opportunities are very favourable. The quaint old France of vineyards, village cafes and rickety 2CVs, or deuches (pronounced 'dersh' — from deux chevaux) as they are known in France still exists, but alongside are some of the most modern cities and up to date, high technology industries in the world. Some French industries are generally acknowledged to be as dynamic as in the USA and more so than in the UK and therefore offer far better career opportunities; these include most scientific and technological companies. However, other industries fare less well and whether you stand to gain or lose on this count will depend on the specific trade or profession that you ply.
Overall, French wages and salaries tend to be higher than in Britain but less than the other richest European countries and lower than corresponding ones in North America. Overall taxation is however much higher (45.3% of th& national wealth) than most other European countries. Therefore, most Britons and Americans undertaking similar work in France to that at home will find that they are paid more for it but the difference may be eaten up in taxes. However, a much greater differential exists in France between the best paid jobs and the worst ones: a particular skill could be sought after and well paid, or it may be much less well regarded by French employers.
Although living costs differ between France and other countries, property is cheaper in France than in the UK or America. As a result a French resident can usually enjoy a higher disposable income than his or her foreign counterpart; this can benefit retirement and holiday home buyers as well as working residents.
